June 19, 2007 HDR Thriller (magpie)

Kim's recent PoeARTica post and comment inspired the search word for today. Magpie? Turns out it's the photographer(!), but it has certainly led to a great shot. Here it is IN LARGE.

I love weather when you can see it in action. For me, it puts things in perspective in terms of scale. Looking at weather like this gives me the sense of earth as a planet (and our living space). As large as it is, it is finite within a certain scale. The earth is 8,000 miles in diameter and the atmospere is just 60 miles thick. All of the clouds that we see occur within the first 15 miles. That's equivalent to a thin coat of paint on a cue ball. We need to take care that coat of air, because their is less of it that we think.
